Meeting Minutes – December 14, 2023

Reno-Stead Airport Association Board Meeting

The following Board members attend the meeting in Tom Hall’s Board room.

Tom Hall, Chair
Scott Gordon, Reno-Stead Airport Manager
Dave Miller, Treasurer
Terry Matter, Member
Bob McLaughlin, Member

We discussed date options and settled on the following dates:

February 13: Short board meeting and speaker. Tentatively. Former Skunkworks employee. Tom will contact him to see if he will be the speaker. Future speaker presentations will be limited to 30 minutes. Bob mentioned the possibility of Larry Cheek serving as a speaker again. His presence will boost attendance by offering Wings credit.

After the meeting, Tom spoke to Eric Schrock, a 30-year veteran with Lockheed Martin and 12 years as a technology development and engineering executive at the Skunk Works. Eric is willing to speak to our Association. It should be a great program.

May 14: Board meeting. Speaker TBA

June 22: (tentative) BBQ Wings & Wheels + polo shirt. The idea is to bring a friend and renew membership in the Reno-Stead Airport Association. Those renewing will be given a polo shirt.

October: 4-6 RARA Airshow: Blue Angels, Canadian Snowbirds + individual performers. This event will be similar to the air races in that there will be paid admission and food vendors. Additionally, there will be security, fire, and medical services at the event.

Shirts. After discussion, the decision was made to have Dave Miller research shirt companies and the cost of shirts. The shirt will be yellow, with the logo “Reno-Stead Airport Association” and the airplane on the front. Dave will report back to the committee, and a decision will be made on the number and sizes to order.

2025: Tom briefly discussed the meeting held at the Reno airport that served as an Exploratory Committee Meeting for Nevada Aviation Day to be held at the Reno-Stead Airport in 2025. A follow-up meeting will be held to continue planning and establish interest groups. Ideas included having a fly-in and a car show. Other activities will likely be added during future meetings,

Board member positions will remain the same for 2024.

A program named “Women in Space” is scheduled for March 21, 2024, at UNR. The program is sponsored by Pathways to Aviation and UNR.

Tom brought up the Fred Michel Scholarship Fund. Terry suggested combining the scholarship funding with RARA. The discussion will continue.

Scott suggested that the Reno-Tahoe Airport Association sponsor a quarterly newsletter, including an Airport Manager’s column, updates from tenant organizations, articles, and other items of interest. There is a need to discuss details, the editor, printing, distribution, and more.

Terry Mater reported that six sites are under consideration for the next National Championship Air Races: Buckeye, AZ; Casper, WY; Pueblo, CO; Roswell, NM; Wendover, UT; and Thermal, CA. Terry will keep us updated on the selection process.

Respectfully submitted,
