The National Guard barracks at Stead is hosting the Annual CAP Nevada Wing Cadet Summer Encampment this week. Their activities are much the same as in previous years. There are about 161 participants from around the state participating.
Many of the activities are on/around the Guard barracks facility, but some will be on or around the ramp near the grandstands if space is available given firefighting activities. Below is a list of activities that will have some visibility to other aviation users at Stead.
Wednesday morning, between 8:00 am – noon, a Guard UH-60 Blackhawk and CH-47 Chinook will be giving Cadet orientation rides.
Thursday afternoon, between 1:45 – 3:45 there will be model rocketry from the field next to the Guard barracks. Rockets should reach no higher than about 250’ AGL.
Friday morning, between 8:30 – 1:00, a Guard C-130 will be giving orientation rides and the cadets will receive pre-flight briefings in the Terminal Meeting Room. It is possible that media will be present for this activity.
On Saturday and Sunday mornings, the CAP have asked to use the space on the ramp in front of the grandstands to practice and conduct their concluding parade. This is contingent on parking needs for firefighting aircraft. The rehearsal on Saturday will be from 9:00 – 10:30, and theSunday event will be from 9:45– 10: 45. If the ramp space is not available, they plan to use the area behind the grandstands, staying clear of the vehicle road.
CAP has asked to use a drone to film the parade. This is approved with the restriction that they remain at or below the height of the ramp light poles.
Please use caution if you are driving near CAP Cadet activities. Let me know if you have any questions, and if schedules change or are modified, I will follow-up with you.
